Companies from different backgrounds have recently begun developing new urban air mobility solutions.
These new aircraft prototypes aim to offer a radical solution to traffic problems in urban areas. Commonly known as air taxis or ‘flying taxis’, it is expected that they will become an alternative mode of travel within a decade.
The potential market for this new form of transport is demonstrated by the numerous projects launched by leading aeronautic and car manufacturers, start-ups and even car hire service companies.
More than 150 Urban Air Mobility projects are already underway. Some companies aim at connecting short distances in a city, others at providing better inter-city links for commuters, businesses and travellers.
To meet global emission targets, these new vehicles must be quiet and have a low carbon footprint.
Current projects are focused on innovative propeller designs enabling electric aircraft to take-off and land vertically. Capacity is expected at between two to four passengers. The aircraft also benefit from progress made in battery technology and flight automation.
Carbon fibers are a must-have material for air taxi designers looking for lightweight and durable composites. Toray Carbon Fibers Europe has the widest range of carbon fibers on the market combined with first-hand experience in the Aeronautic industry. Our Torayca® Carbon Fibers are THE high-performance solution for your projects.
On 14 July 2020, Toray signed a partnership with the German start-up company Lilium.
Lilium’s pioneering 100% electric aircraft will use Torayca® carbon fibers and composite materials for its fuselage, wings, blades and other structural components.
